It’s clear that me loves all things Nicaragua, but me love for all things India has got to be as much, meaning I heart India big time. The first time I went to India, I was a mere little twenty something. Never traveled. Completely terrified. I was for sure going to be strangled by a snake and/or something worse. Right, how bad could it be.
But I wasn’t alone. I was travelling with a team of film makers that were on a mission to make an epic, but ended up as a forgettable film. No matter. The experience was anything but forgettable. Like my first trip to Nicaragua, this adventure would prove to be a big time watershed moment. I look back on it with much fondness. So when I discovered Lali Kids and their Indian inspired designs…oh my…the smells, sights and sounds of India enveloped me once again and I was transported.
Lali (meaning “little darling” in Hindi) embodies the magic of girlhood – from receiving your very first doll to learning how to ride a bike to laughing and playing with friends. Lali represents the universal happy moments experienced by generations of little girls.
The Lali concept was born from nostalgia. Founded in 2013 by Kinnari McDevitt, Lali was inspired by a childhood shared between India and the United States. Early memories of bright, colorful silk saris and warm, aromatic fabric shops were some of the influences for this A/W 2017 collection of modern yet timeless childrenswear. The versatile garments also have a fresh American feel with rich colors, textured, and lightweight fabrics. Kinnari combines contemporary silhouettes with classically refined aesthetics to create comfortable clothing that children will want to wear every day.
The goal of Lali is to intentionally slow down the process of making and wearing clothing. Moving away from mass production, Kinnari draws each print herself and employs small-scale printers and weavers. The result is highly wearable fashion that is both creatively conceived and exceptionally well made.
Lali hopes to create every little darling’s favorite dress – the one she wants to wear over and over again, the one that makes her feel most herself, the one that allows her freedom to express herself, the one that will help her create memories that last a lifetime– playfully inspired clothing for little darlings.
Now you get it too, don’t you. You can see the flash of the brightly colored Rajasthan skirts, hear the tinkle of a passing jewelled anklet, and the rich smells of mouth watering flavours…you just booked your flight, didn’t you…India bound. Yea, me too.
