It’s pretty clear that I am completely crushing over merino wool. Not just merino wool, but superfine merino wool. And perfect timing, because even though we learned how perfect merino wool was for the summertime, here in Kelowna the temps be dipping in a fast way. Boom! It was summer. Boom! It’s now fall. I don’t even want to think about the obviously fast approaching winter. We all are in need of superfine merino wool, never mind just the kiddos.
Let’s review. Merino wool is the perfect fabric for active clothing and kids are, if nothing else, active. Merino keeps you warm when times are cool and the other way around too. Effectively managing the body’s microclimate, even if you didn’t know you had one. It’s extremely soft, breathable, moisture wicking, hypoallergenic, machine washable and fast drying. Totes love the “Hey mom! It doesn’t itch! factor. It’s really a no brainer, dontcha think? Yep, I see all of you swooning with all that crushing for all things superfine merino wool.
We have featured a few much loved designers that create sweet merino wool delights, and I am so glad to add luvmother to the list. This amazing kids brand was created in 2014 with but an idea by outdoor enthusiasts, Kevin Peacock and Giselle Murphy. It was an idea spurned by their twin girls growing out of their Norwegian family merino wool hand-me-downs.
Finding it hard to source new ones, they decided to make their own. What makes this company stand apart is that while many companies create just sleepwear and long johns, luvmother offer stylish crossover pieces such as leggings (that yes, work as long underwear), wool sweaters, hoodies and shirts. It’s about dressing your kids in a minimalistic way that is perfect for every situation.
Luvmother is designed in Canada and manufactured in Canada, the United States and Portugal. It may cost a little more to do it this way but it allows Kevin and Giselle to build and maintain solid relationships with the talented people they work with and affords them an attention to detail that can be felt in every piece luvmother creates.
And it doesn’t stop there:
- they source the merino wool from either certified non-mulesed or ceased-mulesed farms in Australia and New Zealand.
- they offset carbon footprints from shipments from the factory in Portugal.
- they started a Zero Waste Project where they give their material scraps to a rug weaver in New York City.
- trims are sourced responsibly and are tested for flammability, lead content and hazardous chemicals.
- their hangtags and packaging are printed on FSC certified papers.
- their garment bags are made from post-consumer plastics and are biodegradable.
Yep, it’s a no brainer for all of us to wear merino wool, but it’s a bigger no brainer to wrap your little adventurers in luvmother merino wool, where their beautiful designs are comfortable, ethically sourced and safe next to skin.
